Hey hey!


Thanks a lot! teachers of the world for visiting my blog.

Ever since I started posting in this blog as part of my TKT preparation course; I wondered if someone besides my Teacher and classmates would ever stumble into this little space of mine.

To my surprise; Up to the date I’ve received 124 visitors from my own country, 32 from my beloved neighbor country, 4 from Indonesia (can you believe that???) and even 1 from the last but not least greater country of Canada.

I couldn’t avoid wondering ¬†who could that people be? was there a reason for them to visit my blog? or was it mere chance? do we have something in common? what were they working on when they came into my blog? and there is an endless list of questions I keep asking myself.

As teachers we must earn the respect of our students from the beginning. As we have learned in our TKT preparation course, we are role models and we must carry ourselves properly in the classroom. If we don’t get the respect of our students, teaching¬†can be difficult,¬†boring, not-fun¬†and perhaps overwhelming.

Most schools have rules for students and teachers and it helps a lot if we put them into practice from day 1. It is important to know our students background,¬†adapt the existing rules as necessary and according to their behavior, once¬†we get¬†the respect we want, we must “pay back”¬† by¬†letting them know that we appreciate their good behavior. Eventually we’ll get to the point where everything goes smoothly and we won’t need to worry (too much) about backtalking.

When the day comes that I have a verbal confrontation with one of my students. I think I would exercise mi right to remain silent (it works like a charm with my wife -winks-), it takes two fools to start a confrontation.

Finally, my fellow teachers… whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things and use them in the classroom ūüėČ

How to prevent confusion.


When it comes to lesson planning, is not easy to figure out what to do and when to do it. Fortunately there are a lot of resources available to teachers. We can find reference materials, such as dictionaries, grammar books, articles and magazines that have been written and updated by more experienced teachers. We can head on the right direction by listening to the advice of other teachers whom have taught at the same level, it could help us design our own planning.


The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come…

I felt a little demotivated on my last TKT class; reason being that I had a somewhat mediocre score in my practice test and the fact that my very first lesson plan didn’t turn out¬† to be as good as I thought it would be ūüė¶ .¬†Let this be my wake up call and help me realize that if I want to get a good score on my upcoming test I ought to study more, think British and hopefully this time¬†I’ll get¬†it right according to Cambridge.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

Solar System now in English.

Title:       The Solar System now in English.

Ages:      Indigo and ADHD children 8 and up, adults welcome.

Level:      Intermediate/advanced.

Target:   To improve the use of nouns, pronouns, adjectives and opposites.

Goal:      Students will be able to make sentences using complex sentences.

  • Knowledge ‚Äď Elicit and find out the knowledge of students about this topic and introduce new vocabulary as needed (e.g. Mars, Earth, Elliptical, Orbit, Moons, Satellites).
  • Comprehension ‚Äď Q & A to engage students and make corrections in the use of new vocabulary if needed (e.g. What is the first planet? or Which is the closest planet?)
  • Application ‚Äď Draw the Solar System or bring a model scale somehow in detail and ask students to name the planets using the L2 language.
  • Analysis ‚Äst Get students talking while they explain how do planets¬†move and why does day/night occur.
  • Synthesis ‚Äď Based on what they have learned and some additional information; have students describe the features of each planets using adjectives and opposites.
  • Evaluation ‚Äď Have students to practice their newly achieved vocabulary by having a¬†debate about what would they name a planet according to its characteristics.

How comes nobody told me this before?



A good teacher should always take into consideration the needs of the students. We need to keep in mind while planning a lesson that our students have different needs and everyone learns in a different way, but ultimately we need to be creative to help them learn.

Is learning outdated? as long as we use Bloom’s Taxonomy in our lesson planning, it will endure. We might come into new topics or subjects while we teach; but His taxonomy¬† will always be an essential tool for a non-mediocre lesson plan.

After 2 hours of deep meditation, I came to my very own conclusion that I never heard about Bloom’s Taxonomy during my previous studies because of the government ūüėģ … Am I kidding? probably not, I have done most of my studies in public schools and most teachers just feel so comfortable teaching the way everyone else has been doing it, they don’t feel like they need to do anything different to get a paycheck. It takes an OUTSTANDING teacher to make a difference.

As teachers, we need to use every possible tool¬†we¬†have available and practice with it until we become experts. Not just to pass a test, to present an assignment or because someone told us “you have to”… Is all about knowledge and making the world a better place.

Improved teaching


Using Bloom’s Taxonomy¬†¬†will help us¬†identify¬†the most important aspects of learning. When planning¬†a class,¬†Teachers who use Bloom’s Taxonomy as a guide for our instruction will find that our students can make better progress as¬†a result of a well planed lesson.

When we have the need to create activities for our students to perform. We should start at the  beginning of the taxonomy and work towards the end; always keeping in mind our students needs and  having them working with the levels of the taxonomy, this will help them to become familiar with the materials that we are going to present in each unit, we can start by doing basic activities to more advanced ones.

The knowledge level is at the base and at this point students learn basic information and are able to remember it, the use of flashcards or other memory games are important at this point to introduce new vocabulary.

The application level, is when students should start solving problems with the information they have learned so far in the unit or class and the assistance of the teacher ūüôā

Finally at the end comes the evaluation level, at this point students interact solving problems with the purpose to have their own opinion. They also should be able to produce what they have learned and COMMUNICATE.

Hello teachers of the world!

Thank you for visiting my blog. My name is Suriel Cortes, broadcasting from Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. I am currently taking the TKT course at my hometown college, globally known as Universidad Nicolaita.

After completing my test, it turned out that I am 38% visual, 38% kinesthetic and 25% auditory learner. It seems to be a good thing, since visual learners can retrieve information faster and easier while working in an assignment. I also like to be hands-on most of the times, which makes me a kinesthetic learner; most kinesthetic learners perform well on sports and arts; this can be seen as an advantage since most companies and schools prefer people whom highest learning preference is visual and kinesthetic.

I consider myself a well-organized teacher and I like drawing, creating, acting and having activities with my students. I am always looking for better ways to teach, I have been using what I have learned in my TKT class with my students, and it has improved my class a lot!

As a teacher, I know how important is to know not just the names of our students, but also what reasons they have to learn a new language; everyone learns in a different way and even though most of the times we won’t be able to teach everyone individually, the better we know our students, the easiest will be to target and fulfill their needs. Knowing our students’ learning styles will be helpful when we need to plan a course or a class and it is also the only way to engage them in a successful learning.

Walk with the wise and become wise


After reviewing most of the applications presented by Ian, I came to the conclusion that when it comes to podcasts, the SCREENR, is the best tool and the one that better fits my needs as a teacher. I like it mainly because there is no need to download anything, it Works on both platforms (mac and Windows) and even I-phones!

It really is a¬†neat tool if you want to broadcast yourself to the world. It is easy and can be¬†used for al levels of learning. It doesn’t¬†take a lot to create a great presentation.¬†I definetly will be using it in the future!
