As teachers we must earn the respect of our students from the beginning. As we have learned in our TKT preparation course, we are role models and we must carry ourselves properly in the classroom. If we don’t get the respect of our students, teaching can be difficult, boring, not-fun and perhaps overwhelming.
Most schools have rules for students and teachers and it helps a lot if we put them into practice from day 1. It is important to know our students background, adapt the existing rules as necessary and according to their behavior, once we get the respect we want, we must “pay back” by letting them know that we appreciate their good behavior. Eventually we’ll get to the point where everything goes smoothly and we won’t need to worry (too much) about backtalking.
When the day comes that I have a verbal confrontation with one of my students. I think I would exercise mi right to remain silent (it works like a charm with my wife -winks-), it takes two fools to start a confrontation.
Finally, my fellow teachers… whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things and use them in the classroom 😉
